Illini Basketball Report Card: vs. Georgetown, Nov. 13, 2018

Player of the game: Georgetown guard James Akinjo

The battle of the standout freshmen point guards tipped in Akinjo’s favor over Illinois’ Ayo Dosunmu — despite the latter scoring a game-high 25 points. Akinjo put up 19 points of his own but added seven assists and three rebounds.

Georgetown: A

The Hoyas kept up a pretty steady layup line on offense, with Mac McClung, James Akinjo and Co. scoring at the rim at will. The Illini’s saving grace? Another stellar game from Dosunmu and a fairly steady Andres Feliz.

Georgetown: B

Foul trouble kept Giorgi Bezhanishvili on the bench more than Illini coach Brad Underwood probably wanted given just limited minutes available for Adonis De La Rosa to help slow down Hoyas’ big man Jessie Govan.

The Illini’s rotation tightened up a bit with Feliz replacing Trent Frazier in the starting lineup. Outside of Da’Monte Williams (11 points and four steals), though, the Illinois bench wasn’t overly productive.

Too many easy buckets for the Hoyas was a clear advantage for Patrick Ewing’s squad. Georgetown went a combined 20 of 21 on layups and dunks, while Illinois was a bit less effective around the rim and made just 12 of 17 free throws.
