Ex-coach glad Romine is back in area

MAHOMET — Chad Benedict would have supported Christian Romine wherever his former player ended up after deciding to transfer from Texas-El Paso a month ago.

But the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ basketball coach admits he’s glad Romine landed at Illinois State. The 2015 News-Gazette second-team All-Area selection announced his intention to join the Redbirds via social media on Tuesday night.

Illini target another Morgan Park point guard

CHICAGO — Illinois re-entred the recruiting picture for Morgan Park senior point guard Charlie Moore last week.

Now the Illini are going after his replacement, offering sophomore point guard Ayo Dosunmu according to a tweet from the Mac Irvin Fire, his AAU team. The 6-foot-3 Class of 2018 prospect also holds offers from Illinois-Chicago and SMU.

John Groce and the Illinois men's basketball program held its annual banquet on Monday night in Champaign.

Noticeably absent were Leron Black, Kendrick Nunn and Jaylon Tate as all three Illini players deal with their legal situations.

Romine will transfer to Illinois State

Former Mahomet-Seymour standout Christian Romine announced Tuesday night he will transfer to Illinois State to continue his basketball career. He released his decision on social media. The 6-foot-9, 220-pounder spent his first season at Texas-El Paso, averaging 0.9 points and 0.4 rebounds in 14 appearances.
