CHAMPAIGN — Illinois’ list of recruiting targets isn’t growing at as rapid a pace as last spring, but the Illini coaching staff is still adding new players to their board.

CHAMPAIGN — Newcomers will now officially outnumber returning scholarship players at Illinois for the 2018-19 season. Freshman forward Matic Vesel has decided to leave the program and return to his native Slovenia to puruse other opportunities, Illinois spokesman Derrick Burson confirmed to The News-Gazette.

Michael Finke picks Grand Canyon

CHAMPAIGN — Grand Canyon always had something none of the other 60-plus programs that reached to Michael Finke after he announced his intent to transfer from Illinois could ever offer. The chance to play with his younger brother, Tim, for one season after the youngest of the Finke sibling signed with the Antelopes back in November.

Another big recruiting weekend coming for Illini

The college basketball world will descend on the Indianapolis suburbs this weekend with the Nike EYBL circuit posted up in Westfield, Ind., and the Under Armour Association playing its second week in Fishers, Ind.

Lucas transferring to Milwaukee

CHAMPAIGN — Half of Te’Jon Lucas’ transfer options would have sent the former Illinois point guard across the country with the likes of San Diego, Santa Clara and Utah State among his finalists.

Lucas chose to return home instead. After two seasons at Illinois, the 6-foot-1 guard announced Tuesday afternoon he would transfer to Milwaukee.

Illini Legends, Lists and Lore: April 22, 2018

Forty-seven years ago today—April 22, 1971—Rick Howat became only the second Illini player named as an academic All-American, joining Dave Scholz, who was similarly honored in 1968 and '69.

Among those joining Howat on the 1971 academic All-America team were UCLA's Sidney Wicks, Kansas's Bud Stallworth and South Carolina's John Roche.
