UI names search panel for Guenther successor

URBANA — The University of Illinois has named the members of a search committee charged with finding a new athletic director to replace Ron Guenther.

They include two UI coaches and three administrators from the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, three faculty members and a UI graduate.

From athletics are Steve Greene, director of development for DIA and a former UI football player; Vince Ille, associate director of athletics; Susan Young, associate director of athletics and the senior woman administrator in the department; wrestling head coach Jim Heffernan; and Susan Novitsky, head coach of women’s swimming.

The faculty members are Cleo D’Arcy, emeritus professor of crop sciences; Chris Span, professor of educational policy, organization and leadership; and Matt Wheeler, professor of animal sciences and chair of the Senates Conference, a faculty senate group that represents all three campuses and advises UI President Michael Hogan. Wheeler also chaired the UI athletic board from 1999-2002 and is one of the UI's faculty representatives to the Big Ten Conference.

UI grad Bob Falato, a member of the UI athletic board, will also serve on the 10-member committee.

The search committee will be led by Larry DeBrock, dean of the College of Business, who was announced as chairman earlier this week.

Guenther, UI athletic director for 19 years, announced Monday that he will retire as of July 1.
