UI swimmers put wins in record book

The University of Illinois women''s swimming and diving team set a school record for wins in a season Saturday, beating Indiana and Notre Dame at IMPE Pool.

The sweep lifted the 22nd-ranked Illini to 10-3, eclipsing the 9-3 record set in 1994-95.

"This says a lot for this extremely talented group of girls," UI coach Jim Lutz said. "Not only have we beaten two Big Ten teams in the last two days (Iowa on Friday), but we are now one of the best teams the school has ever produced."

The UI won 13 of 14 races in beating Indiana 199.50-98.50 and Notre Dame 193-107.

Nicola Homenock and Traci Bollinger each won four events for the Illini. Jodi Smith and Erin Didde each won three events.

Aguero rolls on.

Illinois freshman Liana Aguero remained unbeaten at the Fighting Illini/First Federal Women''s Tennis Classic at the Atkins Tennis Center, beating New Mexico''s Natasha Jones 6-3, 6-2 in a No. 6 singles match Saturday.

Aguero is 3-0 in singles play and 1-0 in doubles.

Other UI winners Saturday: Susanne Land at No. 2, Jessica Klapper at No. 3, Lindsey Bruce at No. 7 and Allison Gottlieb at No. 8.

Kara Loffelmacher and Stacy Shapiro teamed for the UI''s only doubles win.

Gymnasts second.

Travis Romagnoli finished third in the all-around as the UI''s men''s gymnastics team placed second at Saturday''s Windy City Gymnastics Invitational in Chicago.

Defending national champion Ohio State won the event, topping the Illini 226.65-223.45.
