Rhodes, Weber lift Illini to 11-4 win

   Danny Rhodes drove in four runs and Brett Weber held Troy State to five hits and one run over eight innings to lead Illinois to an 11-4 college baseball victory Saturday afternoon at Troy, Ala.

   The Illini, 3-6 after winning their second in a row, will play Kent, Ohio, at 10 a.m. today in their third and final game of the Blue-Gray Baseball Classic.

   Illinois scored five times in the sixth inning, including three on a double by Rhodes, to take command of the game. The other runs of the inning scored on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk.

   The Illini added two runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Todd McClure and a sacrifice fly by Rhodes.

   Weber, 1-1, struck out 10 and allowed five hits.

   McClure went 3 for 5 with three RBI, while teammate Aaron Nieckula drove in two runs.

   

In men''s gymnastics:

   Ohio State 231.75, Illinois 228.925. The Illini set event records in the vault, parallel bars and floor exercise and had a season-high score against the top-ranked Buckeyes at Huff Hall.

   Travis Romagnoli won the vault (9.75), and Yuval Ayalon was second in the all-around (57.775).

   "Everybody was psyched up because of the competition," UI coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish."

   Ohio State''s Blaine Wilson, a 1996 Olympian, won 3 of 6 events, including the all-around.

   

In women''s gymnastics:

   Ohio State 195.3, Illinois 191.9. Becky Ashton scored a career-high and UI season-high 9.9 to win the balance beam, and Puni Viernes and Kim Berres tied for first in the floor exercise (9.85) for the Illini at Huff Hall. The UI is 7-7 overall, 4-4 Big Ten.

   

In men''s tennis:

   Boise State 4, Illinois 3. Playing without doubles player Brady Blain  out 3-5 weeks with a jammed thumb  the Illini lost in the semifinals of the HEB Tennis Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas.

   Jerry Turek (No. 1 singles), Oliver Freelove (No. 4) and Matt Snyder won matches for the Illini.

   Freelove teamed with Jakub Teply for the UI''s lone doubles win.
