SportsNotes: WBCA honors Illinois'' Berggren

University of Illinois junior Ashley Berggren earned honorable mention All-American status on the Women''s Basketball Coaches Association team.

Berggren helped the Illini reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament. Illinois also shared the Big Ten title with Purdue and Michigan State.

Purdue''s Jannon Roland and Wisconsin''s Keisha Anderson were also honored.

Ex-Illini Baseball update:

Scott Spiezio, Oakland Athletics'' starting second baseman smacked his first home run of the season on Saturday against the Yankees. OK, Oakland lost the game 10-5, it is still an important landmark for Spiezio. Keep hitting like that and he might just move up from the deadly eighth spot in the lineup.

In women''s tennis:

Illinois got singles victories from Kara Loffelmacher and Allison Gottlieb but dropped a Big Ten Conference women''s tennis match 5-2 Sunday against Northwestern at the Atkins Tennis Center.

Loffelmacher was a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 winner at No. 4 singles, and Gottlieb bounced back for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6. Five of the six singles matches went to three sets.

Illinois fell to 7-11 overall, 2-4 in the Big Ten.
