Yanni leads U.S. romp

Illinois freshman Aminata Yanni scored a game-high 23 points in 11 minutes Thursday as the United States defeated Puerto Rico 115-26 at the Women's Junior World Championship Qualifying Tournament in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Yanni made 10 of 12 field goals and 3 of 7 free throws for the United States, which led 63-8 at halftime. She also had four rebounds and two assists.

Alana Beard also scored 23 points for the U.S. squad, which also received 10 points each from Cappie Pondexter and Ashley Robinson.

"Our players are really good about focusing in on some things that we need to improve on for the next three games," said U.S. coach Geno Auriemma of Connecticut. "I also think that they're mature enough to see that the next three games we could be playing Argentina, Brazil and Cuba, and they realize the competition will be stepping up quite a bit."
