***** CENTENNIAL Girls'' Basketball Despite the loss of three starters from their state tournament team, Tim Fairchild''s Chargers keep chugging along. Centennial takes a 7-0 record into its game tonight at Danville, a mark that includes an impressive 52-36 victory against Urbana. Since the beginning of last season, the Chargers are 38-3 overall and 17-0 in the Big 12 Conference. **** CHAMPAIGN CENTRAL Boys'' Basketball The reigning Big 12 co-champions are off to a 5-0 start, their fastest getaway after five games in the tenure of 11th-year coach Scott Davis. The Maroons'' closest call was a 70-67 battle with crosstown rival Centennial in the opener of The News-Gazette Classic. If Central can get past Mattoon on Friday, it sets up an important early season showdown Dec. 20 with Big 12 leader Bloomington. *** IROQUOIS WEST Girls'' Basketball Speaking of showdowns, Hanns Meyer''s Raiders scored a commanding 68-52 victory against Paxton- Buckley-Loda in a battle of unbeatens last week at Gilman. Iroquois West ruled the boards (35-22) and received a near double-double from Kare Seibring (19 points, nine rebounds) to end PBL''s unbeaten streak at seven. The Raiders take a 9-0 record into tonight''s game at Fisher. ** PRAIRIE CENTRAL Boys'' Basketball Mark down Tom Posey''s Hawks as the team to beat in the Corn Belt. Behind tournament MVP C.J. Wrede, Prairie Central went 5-0 en route to the Topper Classic title. Just one Topper opponent scored more than 47 points against the Hawks, who took Tri-Valley''s best shot before emerging with an 85-76 overtime victory. PC takes a 7-0 record into Friday''s home game against Pontiac (1-5). * MAHOMET-SEYMOUR Girls'' Basketball Their season is just seven games old, but Nathan Seal''s Bulldogs already are within five of matching last season''s victory total of 11. The Eureka Tournament champions will take a 6-1 record into tonight''s Corn Belt game at Bloomington Central Catholic. The lone blemish was a seven-point setback at Urbana. No opponent has scored as many as 50 points on the Bulldogs so far.
