Opportunity knocking for Auburn, UI coach

CHAMPAIGN They are undefeated through 11 games, sport a gaudy margin of victory (27.6 points) and compete in the nation''s toughest conference. But Auburn''s Tigers aren''t ranked, and they aren''t getting much respect. Why? Check the schedule. Auburn played its first nine games at home, and the opponents went like this: Troy State, Prairie View A&M, Florida A&M, Belmont, UAB, Furman, North Carolina A&T, Alabama A&M and Appalachian State. Then the Tigers hit the road and defeated Stephen F. Austin and Clemson, the latter by a 60-58 count Friday in Atlanta. They remain one of eight unbeatens in Division I women''s basketball. The Tigers will find another proving ground today at the Assembly Hall, taking on 7-2 Illinois. A victory by either squad should propel it closer to The Associated Press Top 25; Auburn received 19 votes last week, Illinois 3. Illinois, meanwhile, has its own intriguing backdrop: Coach Theresa Grentz enters with 599 career wins and seeks to become the eighth coach to reach 600. The Illinois players, who scattered to their hometowns after last week''s victory against Missouri, returned Thursday and were scrambling to prepare a gift for their coach should the milestone be reached today. If they feel any pressure to get Grentz No. 600 on the first try, it''s not evident. "They want to beat Auburn; they just want to win the game," UI associate head coach Renee Reed said. "We want her to know that we realize this is big. But I didn''t sense any (pressure)." The coaching subplot extends to the Auburn sideline, too, where Joe Ciampi is chasing 600. Ciampi, in his 26th season overall, has 573 wins and his Auburn resume includes three Final Four appearances, three SEC regular season titles and four SEC tournament championships. Ciampi''s current squad earned by far its most meaningful win Friday, scoring the game''s final 10 points to clip Clemson in the Russell Athletic Shootout. Sophomore guard Natasha Brackett sank two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to win it. Brackett is one of four returning starters from a squad that had a un- Tigerlike season a year ago. After starting 11-0 against many of the same names as this season the Tigers limped home at 3-11 in the SEC, their worst record ever in SEC play.
