Happy 70th, Dick Butkus!

Illini Legends, Lists & Lore: Mike Gow

Mike Gow, one of Illinois football’s greatest defensive backs, celebrates his 60th birthday today. A letterman for coach Bob Blackman from 1972 to ’74, Gow came to Champaign-Urbana from Farmington, Mich. He was a three-time All-Big Ten selection on a team that included a number of outstanding players, including Lonnie Perrin, Revie Sorey, Dan Beaver, Tom Hicks and Scott Studwell. Gow is the vice president at Thomson Financial in Chicago. Gow’s Illini career, by the numbers:

1: Tied for first with Al Brosky for most interceptions in a season (10 in 1973)

3: Single-game record-tying number of interception he had against Minnesota in 1973

4: Record number of interceptions he made against Stanford in 1974

14.9: Average number of yards he returned interceptions during his career

19: Number of career interceptions he had for the Illini (second to Al Brosky’s 30)

24: Jersey number he wore at Illinois

56: Yardage of his longest punt return (Stanford, 1974)

1974: Season he participated in the Hula Bowl All-Star Game
