Illini Legends, Lists & Lore: This date in Illini history
Forty years ago Sunday, Jed Foster sank two free throws with just 11 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Illini basketball team an 80-78 victory against Iowa. Nick Weatherspoon (22 points and 16 rebounds) and Nick Conner (19 and 12) helped Illinois win its sixth consecutive home game. Other memorable moments on this date in history:
1930: Illinois held Michigan to a total of four field goals in a 24-18 basketball victory at Ann Arbor.
1941: Walter “Hoot” Evers scored 18 of Illinois’ 47 points in a six-point victory against Michigan at Huff Gym.
1944: Longtime UI sports information director L.M. “Mike” Tobin died at age 64.
1947: At halftime of Illinois’ basketball game vs. Ohio State, UI’s Alex Agase was awarded the Silver Football Award from the Chicago Tribune’s Wilfred Smith. Illinois’ Whiz Kids went on to beat the Buckeyes 61-42.
1968: Dave Scholz capped a spectacular 26-point scoring performance by drilling a 20-foot jumper with five seconds left as Illinois beat host Minnesota 61-60.
1975: Otho Tucker scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half and led Illinois to a 16-point win against Wisconsin.
1979: As a blizzard raged outside the Assembly Hall, Ohio State topped unbeaten Illinois 69-66 in overtime. A 25-4 disadvantage in free throws ended the Illini’s opportunity to be ranked No. 1.
1990: Lou Henson’s Illini topped Northwestern for the 26th time in 29 tries behind 26 points from Marcus Liberty.
2001: Sergio McClain had only the second triple-double in Illinois basketball history and led the Illini past Michigan 80-51. McClain had 10 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
2001: Three Illini track and field standouts set school records. Perdita Felicien set a UI mark in the 60-meter hurdles (8.2 seconds), Angela Hilgers broke the pole vault record (11 feet, 53/4 inches) and Adeoti Oshinowo threw the 20-pound weight a record distance of 56-5.25.
