Illini Legends, Lists & Lore: Bill Butkovich
Sunday marks the 89th anniversary of the birth of Bill Butkovich. He played for coach Ray Eliot’s Illinois football team, lettering from 1943 to ’45. A native of St. David, he and brother Tony were star athletes at Lewistown High School. Tony lettered for Illinois in 1941 and ’42, and he died in service during World War II. Bill’s Illini teammates included Tom Zaborac, Eddie Bray, Buddy Young, Les Bingaman, Paul Patterson and Mac Weskunas. Bill served as head football coach for Bourbonnais High School and later Tuscola High School. During his nine seasons at Tuscola, the Warriors went 48-21-6. Butkovich served as principal at Tuscola High School until his retirement. In 2005 he was inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. In his latter years, Butkovich served as director of the Illini Letterman’s Club. He died Sept. 6, 2008, at age 84.
