Illini Legends, Lists & Lore: Quinn Richardson
Twenty-nine years ago, Quinn Richardson scored a team-leading 16 points, but coach Lou Henson’s Illini basketball team lost 54-51 to Kentucky in the Mideast Regional final of the NCAA tournament in Lexington, Ky. With Efrem Winters playing on a sore ankle, Illinois’ season ended at 26-5, barely missing a berth in the Final Four.
A product of Eisenhower High in Robbins, Richardson redshirted during the 1982-83 season at Henson’s request and served as captain of the 1984 Illini. He, Doug Altenberger, Bruce Douglas, Winters and George Montgomery started virtually every game for the Big Ten champions (15-3).
Richardson averaged 7.7 points per game that season and had 93 assists, a total bested only by Douglas. Wearing No. 21, he had played only 22 and 18 games, respectively, during his freshman and sophomore years.
Now 51 years old, the 1984 School of Business major serves as first vice president at LaSalle Bank in Chicago.
