Illini Legends, LIsts & Lore: Chester Frazier

Sunday is Chester Frazier’s 27th birthday. Frazier was a four-time letter winner and a two-time captain for Bruce Weber’s Illinois basketball team from 2005 to ‘09. He just completed his first season at Kansas State as an assistant coach for Weber, helping guide the Wildcats to a 27-8 record and a share of the school’s first Big 12 Conference title since 1977. Frazier was the Illini starter at point guard in 88 of his 125-game career, averaging five points, four rebounds, four assists and one steal per game. He finished his career in seventh place on Illinois’ career assists list with 484. Frazier led all Big Ten Conference players in assists his senior year in 2008-09 and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten kudos. He also was Illinois’ MVP that season. Known for his prowess as a defensive player, Frazier was a member of the league’s All-Defensive Team as a sophomore and senior. He played two years of professional basketball in Germany, first for Goettingen (2009-10) and then for the Wuerzburg Basketball Club (2011-12). Before his time in Germany, Frazier served as Weber’s graduate assistant and video coordinator at Illinois from 2010 to ‘11. A native of Baltimore, he earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation management from Illinois in 2009 and took several courses toward a master’s degree in educational policy studies. Frazier and his wife, Sarah, were married in July.
