Illini recruiting target picks Indiana
MOUNT CARMEL — Tyra Buss, a Class of 2014 recruiting target of the Illinois women’s basketball program, announced Wednesday she has made a verbal commitment to Indiana.
The high-scoring junior point guard from Mount Carmel High School said in a statement that she had informed Hoosiers coach Curt Miller of her decision in a phone call earlier in the day.
“I have always dreamed of playing in the Big Ten, and I wanted to stay fairly close to home,” the two-time News-Gazette All-State second-team pick said in the statement. “Coach Miller has offered me the chance to do both.
“He has an amazing coaching staff, and he definitely knows how to coach point guards. His record speaks for itself. His offense is a perfect fit for me.”
The 5-foot-7 Buss entered this season with 2,146 career points and is the fastest girl in state basketball history to reach the 2,000 milestone.
In 2010-11, Buss set a state girls’ freshman scoring record of 1,025 points. As a sophomore, she scored the third-most points — 1,121 — for a single season in girls’ state history.
A source indicated Tuesday that Buss had narrowed her choices to three Big Ten schools — Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin — as well as nearby Evansville.
