Illini soccer sees its goal

At least the Illinois women's soccer team knows what it's shooting for.

The Illini dropped their second straight game to a ranked team Sunday, falling 2-1 to No. 24 Penn State in Big Ten action at State College, Pa.

Illinois, in its first season of varsity play, fell 1-0 to No. 21 Minnesota on Friday.

"Playing two ranked teams gives us a look at the next level," UI coach Jillian Ellis said. "I don't think we're too far away."

The Nittany Lions, who outshot the Illini 18-6, scored once in the first half and once in the second before Julie Schueller headed in a Rachel Smith corner kick at the 66:04 mark for Illinois.

"Penn State was ranked 10th in the nation last year," Ellis said. "To play a team of that caliber head-to-head is a big accomplishment."

Illinois is 4-4 overall, 0-2 Big Ten. Penn State is 7-2, 4-0.

In volleyball: Errors cost Illini.

The No. 25 Illinois volleyball team committed 46 hitting errors and fell 15-5, 13-15, 15-13, 15-12 to No. 15 Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.

"Playing our normal game probably would have brought us a victory tonight," Illini coach Don Hardin said. "Our error percent was real high today. Every other phase of the game was great."

Tracey Marshall led the UI attack with 23 kills but had 14 errors. Mary Coleman had 22 kills and 14 errors. As a team, the Illini had 92 kills in 206 attempts.

Illinois fell to 9-3, 0-2. Michigan State is 11-4, 1-1.

Hardin takes little solace in pushing the Spartans to four games. "We're not happy with playing them close," he said.

In women's tennis: Kung's consolation.

Illinois freshman Simone Kung dominated the consolation championship of the Joan Thompson Invitational on Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

Kung beat Alabama's Jill Breslin 6-1, 6-2 to take the Flight A consolation championship.

In women's golf: Karmazin's card.

Karen Karmazin carded a final-round 76 to tie for eighth at the Lady Buckeye tournament in Columbus, Ohio. Karmazin shot a three-day 228. The Illini also finished eighth in the 13-team tournament with a 960 team score. Ohio State won with 894.

In men's golf: UI 13th.

Illinois shot its low round of the weekend Sunday, a 300 to take 13th in the 17-team Northern Intercollegiate tournament in East Lansing, Mich.
