Freshman fires up Illini soccer team

NORMAL – Freshman Lisa Baldwin's second-half goal gave the Illinois women's soccer team a 1-0 victory Friday afternoon in its season opener at Illinois State.

From 10 feet out, Baldwin headed in a pass from sophomore Kris Twyning 55 minutes, 63 seconds into the game for the Illini.

Baldwin was one of seven freshmen, including one redshirt, to start for coach Jillian Ellis, whose UI team has won its opener in both years of existence.

"It's nice to have this one," Ellis said. "We've been in training for two weeks without a game."

Goalkeeper Amy Bessette made seven saves for the shutout against the Redbirds (0-2).

The Illini's home opener is 1 p.m. Sunday in the soccer multiplex at First and Stadium.

"We're looking forward to being home, hopefully in front of a big crowd," Ellis said.
