UI soccer team back on track

Amy Bessette notched her third shutout of the season the easy way as the Illinois women's soccer team broke a two-game losing streak Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Valparaiso at the UI Soccer Complex.

The Illini (6-2) held Valpo shotless in the game.

Two freshmen teamed up to open the scoring for the Illini, Lindsay Johnson converting a pass from Lisa Baldwin five minutes, 29 seconds into the game.

Sarah Aberle also scored in the first half on a pass from Emily Brown.

In the second half, Julie Schueller rebounded an indirect free kick at 70:42.

Illinois next plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when Purdue visits. The Boilermakers are in their first year and do not officially join the Big Ten until 1999.

Illini eliminated in men's tennis

Oliver Freelove and Cary Franklin made the semifinals of the National Claycourt Championships in Baltimore but lost 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 to a team from UNLV.

The pair upset the second-ranked team out of Duke en route to the semifinals. It was the first time an Illini duo has reached the semis of a collegiate major.

"This is a great start for Oliver and Cary," UI tennis coach Craig Tiley said. "Reaching the semifinals of a collegiate major is quite an accomplishment and something they can build on for the rest of the year."
