UI earns soccer berth

CHAMPAIGN – Freshman Emily Brown scored two goals to propel Illinois' women's soccer team to the postseason for the first time in the program's history with a 5-0 victory over Iowa on Friday night.

The Illini (9-5 overall, 3-4 Big Ten) clinched a spot in the conference tournament Nov. 6-8 at State College, Pa.

"That was one of our goals for the year. ... I'm just delighted we're going to the tournament," second-year UI coach Jillian Ellis said. "I told the players to enjoy this tonight, but then they've got to get ready for our next match (Sunday) against Minnesota."

Lindsay Johnson, Kelly Buszkiewicz and Molly Brown also scored for Illinois, which led 2-0 at halftime.

The UI defense held Iowa to two shots as goalkeepers Amy Bessette and Sarah Heggen combined for the squad's fifth shutout.

"Iowa never stopped. They never quit," Ellis said.

Hawkeye goalie Gabe Mauren made nine saves.

The Gophers host Illinois at 1 p.m. Sunday.
