UI soccer closes with win
The Illinois women's soccer team ended the regular season Sunday with a 3-0 victory against visiting Oakland University.
Lisa Baldwin got the scoring started for the Illini (12-7), netting a ball on an assist by Sarah Aberle 1:05 into the contest. Kelly Buszkiewicz at 6:55 and Kim Doetzel at 41:43 also scored for the UI in the first half.
Goalkeepers Amy Bessette and Sarah Heggen combined on the shutout as Illinois ended the regular season on a three-game winning streak.
In its second year as a varsity program, the UI moves on to the Big Ten Conference tournament this weekend at State College, Pa. The Illini, seeded eighth, meet No. 1 seed Penn State on Friday. Semifinals are Saturday with the championship game on Sunday.
In swimming and diving:
The UI's 1,500 freestyle relay team captured first place Sunday at the Northwestern Relays, leading Illinois to third in the nine-team meet in Evanston.
Nicola Homenock, Kelly Handel and Jen Peters combined to win in 15 minutes, 10.44 seconds, finishing ahead of Michigan and Northwestern.
The Wolverines won the meet with 206 points, followed by the Wildcats (178) and the Illini (162).
Illinois took second in the 300 butterfly relay, the 800 freestyle relay, the 500 free relay and the 400 individual medley relay.
The Illini next compete at the Illinois Dual Meet Extravaganza this Friday and Saturday at the IMPE pool.
Big Ten Championships.
Tara Mendozza took 15th Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich., covering the 5K course in 18:26 in leading the Illini women's team to eighth.
Mendozza was the UI's top finisher in each of her four races this season. Lindsay Martin followed Mendozza in 24th at 18:42.
In the men's race Scott McClennan led the Illini with a 22nd-place finish, covering the 8K course in 25:30 as Illinois finished eighth.
Cortney Lamb was second for the UI in 35th with a time of 25:47.
Wisconsin won the women's title, and Michigan won the men's crown.
