Illini drink from Mountaineer Cup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Davy Crockett has nothing on the Illinois women's soccer team.

The Illini, playing in the first Mountaineer Cup tournament hosted by West Virginia, took home the crown with Sunday's 3-0 victory against Duquesne.

Junior Sarah Rowland got the UI (4-0) started early, stripping the ball from a defender and scoring unassisted 2 minutes, 3 seconds into the match.

Freshman Laura Freeman scored her first goal off a Hollie Schurr corner kick, then assisted on Emily Brown's goal as the UI took a 3-0 lead before halftime.

"We have come out focused and mentally prepared for each match," Illinois head coach Tricia Taliaferro said. "We're excited about the weekend. It was nice to accomplish something we set out to achieve all week."

Brown, who had four of Illinois' 18 shots, has scored in each of the team's four matches, breaking an Illini record for consecutive games with a goal. She has 17 career goals, tying her for the UI career mark with sophomore Lisa Baldwin.

Illinois, which has started 4-0 for the third straight season, had senior Amy Bessette and sophomore Sarah Heggen split goalkeeping duties as they have all year. It made no difference because Duquesne didn't get a single shot on goal.

The UI next plays Boston on Friday at the Northwestern Tournament and then hosts Missouri at 1 p.m. Sunday.
