Illinois records soccer shutout

Sophomore Lisa Baldwin scored two goals as Illinois blanked Boston University 3-0 on Friday in women's soccer at the Northwestern Invitational in Evanston.

The Illini (5-0) also received a goal from junior Julie Schueller, who scored from 30 yards out early in the first half.

Sophomore Sarah Heggen made two saves and senior Amy Bessette one for Illinois, which has outscored its opponents 14-1.

"Our overall team defense has been outstanding," UI coach Tricia Taliaferro said. "We're shutting down passes and winning balls in the air. Those are the types of things winning teams do well."

Baldwin scored her first goal on an assist from Emily Brown nine minutes after Schueller's goal. It was the fourth time this season the Illini scored two goals in the first half.

Baldwin added an insurance goal, her team-high fifth of the season, off an assist by Schueller in the second half.

In women's cross-country, Illini earn third

Freshman Cecelia Williams claimed eighth place in 19:05.75 as Illinois started its season with a third-place finish Friday at the Evian Cross-Country Challenge in Columbia, Mo.
