Illini soccer team fires blanks on road

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue goalie Jocelyn Cavalier made several huge saves as the Boilermakers defeated Illinois 1-0 on Sunday in Big Ten Conference soccer.

The Illini (9-5-2, 3-4-2) were blanked for the second consecutive game.

"Anytime you try to take a program to a new level, it is difficult," UI coach Tricia Taliaferro said of her squad, which tied Indiana 0-0 Friday night.

Illinois outshot Purdue 19-4, but Cavalier turned back shots by Heidi Holtzman, Sarah Rowland and Lindsay Johnson.

"Overall, we played well today. We're frustrated that we couldn't get it done. We're still lacking the maturity and the experience that it takes to finish, and that will come," Taliaferro said.

Rebecca Broering scored the game's lone goal at 60:37 for Purdue against UI goalie Sarah Heggen.

The loss dropped the Illini to 0-3-2 in their five Big Ten road games this season.
