Illini take soccer scrimmage

CHAMPAIGN – Meghan Kolze and Tara Schuling scored as host Illinois topped Marquette 2-1 before a crowd of 400 in a women's soccer scrimmage Saturday night.

UI coach Tricia Taliaferro employed several combinations against Marquette in her team's tuneup to Friday's season opener at Eastern Illinois.

"We have really been mixing it up in practice," Taliaferro said. "That certainly helped us tonight. I'm not set on a lineup yet, but it was nice to see so many different players contribute."

Kolze scored with 2:15 left in the first half, knocking in a loose ball in front of the Marquette net.

"I was in the right place at the right time," the sophomore midfielder said. "Tara gave us a great kick and Sue (Hodson) deflected it slightly for me to put it in the net."

Schuling scored on a second-half penalty kick to give the UI a 2-0 lead.
