Walker, Joyce help UI start on right foot

CHARLESTON – Tiffani Walker and Colleen Joyce each scored goals as Illinois defeated Eastern Illinois 2-0 on Friday in the season opener for both women's soccer teams.

In the 13th minute, Walker scored on a rebound after Lindsay Johnson's shot bounced away from Panthers goalie Jeanine Fredrick.

Joyce completed the first-half scoring on an assist from Meghan Kolze.

Eastern compacted its defense and was outshot 28-3 by Illinois.

"I was pleased that we stayed with our game plan. Illinois is a much more experienced team than us," EIU coach Steve Ballard said. "A lot of their shots came outside the box area, so defensively I thought we played a solid game."

Fredrick, a senior, made 12 saves. Her high is 18, which she accomplished during the final game of her freshman season.
