Illini soccer tops Spartans

It was the perfect way for Illinois to finish a weekend and start the Big Ten soccer season.

The surging Illini used goals from freshman Tara Hurless and Tara Schuling, and the defense allowed just one shot on goal in the 2-0 victory against Michigan State on Sunday in Champaign.

Illinois also beat Michigan this weekend to open conference play and is 4-2 on the season.

The Illini will try to improve their Big Ten mark Friday against Minnesota on the road.

"We were fortunate to have two home games to start conference play," Illinois coach Tricia Taliaferro said. "Everybody is contributing and creating chances for each other."

UI women take sixth

Marla Cox and Laurin Kanda each shot 72 Sunday in the final round of the Lady Northern Intercollegiate at Stone Creek. The Illini finished sixth in the three-day event with a team score of 902.

Cox, whose even-par round Sunday was a personal best, finished tied for 16th. Kanda tied for 20th.
