Kolze, Walker pace Illinois'' road victory

ATHENS, Ga. – Illinois'' soccer team struggled on the road last season, but it enjoyed its first trip away from home this season.

Meghan Kolze and Tiffani Walker each scored a goal in the Illini''s 2-1 victory Friday against Georgia in front of 3,312 fans.

"This is a huge win for us on the road," said UI coach Janet Rayfield, whose squad went 2-9-1 on the road in 2002.

Kolze gave Illinois (2-1) a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when she headed a Christen Kamiski restart into the net from close range. Walker scored an unassisted goal in the 54th minute from 20 yards out.

The UI defense held the Bulldogs to eight shots, including three on goal. Illini goalkeeper Leisha Alcia made two saves.

"Our defensive effort was outstanding today," Rayfield said. "We emphasized defense all offseason, and now our team is focused on it and believes that defense can win games."
