Illini soccer loses in OT

Illinois took No. 11 Auburn to overtime Sunday, but the unbeaten Tigers prevailed 2-1 in a nonconference women''s soccer match in Alabama.

Reigning SEC player of the year Sarah Steinman scored both Auburn goals, including the game-winner seven minutes into overtime. Illinois fell to 2-2.

"We came out with a lot more intensity and created a lot of chances in the second half," UI coach Janet Rayfield said. "We had them on their heels at times but just didn''t make that final run or pass to finish the job.

"This game is one of those that could have gone either way."

Illinois tied the match at 1 in the second half on freshman Jessica Bayne''s header off a Christen Karniski pass.

The Illini meet Evansville at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Champaign.
