5 o'clock shadow: Big Ten honors DiBernardo

PARK RIDGE — Illini sophomore Vanessa DiBernardo was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer on Monday.

The conference honored the midfielder following her four-goal weekend against Gonzaga and Toledo. DiBernardo scored the winning goals in each match.

Against Gonzaga on Friday, DiBernardo tallied the first two goals in a 5-1 Illinois home victory. On Sunday, the Naperville native again found the back of the net twice as the Illini rolled past visiting Toledo 5-1.

As a freshman, DiBernardo was selected Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice. She also was a three-time conference Freshman of the Week en route to earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors in 2010.
