Soccer still on shutout roll

EVANSTON — The No. 25 Illinois women's soccer team extended its streak of shutout victories to five Thursday night with a 3-0 Big Ten victory against Northwestern.

The Illini, who won their sixth in a row overall, produced plenty of offense this time after winning each of their previous four matches by 1-0 scores. Marissa Mykines staked Illinois (12-4-1 overall, 6-2-1 Big Ten) to a 1-0 first-half lead, and Vanessa DiBernardo and Shayla Mutz scored in the second half.

The UI winning streak is its longest since the 2004 Illini opened the season with seven straight victories.

In women's tennis:

Trio advances at regional. Three Illini moved within one victory of reaching the main draw during singles qualifying in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Columbus, Ohio.

Breanne Smutko, Chelcie Abajian and Julia Jamieson each won second-round matches after receiving first-round byes. Smutko, the No. 1 qualifying seed, defeated Janelle Prisner of Eastern Illinois 6-2, 6-1.

The third and final qualifying round is today, with eight spots in the main draw at stake.
