Tennis duo pulls upsets

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Illinois’ Rachael White and Melissa Kopinski defeated two Top 10 doubles teams Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships.
“Rachael and Melissa are keeping everything really simple and are executing well,” UI assistant tennis coach Georgia Rose said.
White and Kopinski defeated Stanford’s Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay, ranked ninth nationally, 8-5. The Illini duo bounced Texas Tech’s Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, ranked sixth nationally, 8-5.

In soccer:

DiBernardo rescues Illini. Junior Vanessa DiBernardo recorded a hat trick, including an unassisted goal in the 84th minute that broke a 2-2 tie, in lifting the Illinois women’s soccer team to a 3-2 win against visiting Michigan State.
DiBernardo scored on a penalty kick and got an assist from Megan Pawloski.

In men's tennis:

Gosea has rough start. Illinois’ Farris Gosea dropped two singles matches Thursday at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
