Rayfield's squad ready for challenges

The Illinois women’s soccer schedule was released Thursday. The Illini will play seven teams that made the NCAA tournament last year during the regular season before they host the Big Ten tournament for the first time since 2000.

Illinois begins the season at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at Notre Dame, which reached the NCAA tournament quarterfinals in 2012. The Illini have their first home match at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 against College of Charleston before in-state foe Illinois State arrives in Champaign for a 7 p.m. match Sept. 1.

Big Ten play starts at 4 p.m. Sept. 20 at Ohio State, and the first conference home match for the Illini is at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 against Iowa. The Big Ten tournament is Nov. 6-10.

“This event will bring some of the best soccer players in the country to Champaign to compete for a coveted title,” Illinois coach Janet Rayfield said. “Our department has shown in the recent months that they can put on a great championship event. The community has shown their incredible support, and I know this November will be no different.”
