Volleyball knocks off another ranked foe

AMES, Iowa — The Illinois volleyball team on Sunday scored its third victory against ranked teams, sweeping No. 11 Iowa State 25-23, 25-19, 25-16.

Jocelynn Birks had 11 kills and Maddie Mayers added nine as the 18th-ranked Illini ended the Iowa State Invitational 1-1 after losing 3-1 to No. 14 San Diego on Saturday.

“It was a good defensive match, a good defensive struggle,” Illinois coach Kevin Hambly said. “It felt like an old Big Ten basketball game ... just grinding it out and being physical. The good thing is that we can win matches like that, we have the ball control as far as the defensive control to give us that.”

Illini soccer earns tie. Vanessa DiBernardo scored unassisted in the second half, and the Illini played to a 1-1 draw against Arizona State at the Sun Devil Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

Illinois (3-2-1) keeper Claire Wheatley had six saves, but she couldn’t stop a Sun Devils penalty kick that leveled the score with about 10 minutes remaining.

“Vanessa got the goal for us, but her overall work rate with getting back on defense was phenomenal,” UI coach Janet Rayfield said.
