Another Flaws hat trick lifts Illini

EVANSTON — Janelle Flaws’ second career hat trick gave her the NCAA lead in goals for the season (18) and lifted the Illinois soccer team to a 3-1 win against Northwestern on Thursday. Flaws’ goal total also ties Emily Brown’s 1999 school record.

The Illini, who were playing without Vanessa DiBernardo, improved to 8-5-2 and 3-3-1 in the Big Ten. Illinois rallied after the Wildcats scored in the fifth minute on a rebound.

“It was a huge game for us,” UI coach Janet Rayfield said. “Any Big Ten win on the road is huge. This team showed a lot of heart and a lot of fight to get back in after going down a goal. We are riding the goal-scoring of Jannelle Flaws right now. There is no doubt about that, but what people don’t realize is that she is getting some great balls from her teammates. She finds ways to get free and we find ways to get her the ball.”
