Florida State closes door on Illini season

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Time simply ran out on the Illinois soccer team in Sunday's NCAA tournament second-round match.

The Illini rallied from a 2-0 second-half deficit on Ella Masar's goal with 14 minutes left, but they couldn't break through again in dropping a 2-1 decision to second-seeded Florida State.

Redmond ends marathon match

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – One hundred minutes of soccer weren't enough to settle the score between Illinois and Florida on Friday during their first-round NCAA match.

Laura Redmond scored in the second overtime period at 101:37 to give coach Janet Rayfield's club a 1-0 victory against the Gators.

No Florida vacation

Illinois (11-6-3) faces 18th-ranked Florida (13-5-1) at 4 p.m. Friday in Gainesville in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Here's a look at the sub-regional, which includes second-seeded Florida State (17-3) and Florida Atlantic (16-3-1).

UI forecast calls for good chance of Bayne

CHAMPAIGN – It was a couple of days before the Big Ten tournament, and Illinois soccer coach Janet Rayfield was talking about players who could make a difference. After Jessica Bayne walked by, Rayfield mentioned Bayne was an Illini poised for a postseason run.

Rayfield's words proved prophetic as Bayne earned all-tournament recognition after scoring the game-winning goal against Minnesota and posting an assist against Michigan.

Illini get another chance

CHAMPAIGN – Since walking off the field Friday after a loss in the Big Ten tournament, Kelly Campbell was nervous about Monday's NCAA soccer tournament selection show.

For the first time in a couple of years, Campbell and the Illini were on the bubble to make the 64-team field. So they crowded around a TVat a steamy Atkins Tennis Center and sweated it out.

Upset leaves Illinois in holding pattern

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – It's all over but the waiting now for Illinois soccer.

After a 2-1 loss to eighth-seeded Michigan in Friday's Big Ten tournament semifinal, the fourth-seeded Illini will have to sit tight until Monday to learn their NCAA tournament fate.

Illini players earn awards

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Illinois senior defender Christen Karniski was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten on Wednesday, and teammates Marti Desjarlais and Emily Zurrer were named to the All-Freshman Team at an awards banquet preceding the league's soccer tournament.

Masar ready to pitch in

CHAMPAIGN – Her housemates like to call her the "Trash Lady," and that's got as much to do with Ella Masar's chores around the pad as her penchant for talking smack.

Masar is one of seven Illinois soccer players who live in a house in Champaign. And she doesn't mind doing a little dirty work.
