STORRS, Conn. — The Illinois soccer team absorbed its first loss of the season when Jessica Shufelt scored 3 minutes, 8 seconds into the second overtime, lifting Connecticut to a 2-1 victory Friday.
The goal was Shufelt’s second of the match and third of the season.
Illinois (3-1) erased a 1-0 deficit when Jordan Hilbrands converted a corner kick in the 72nd minute. Marissa Mykines and Danielle Kot assisted on Hilbrands’ second goal of the season.

Illini Insider: Recruits in the news is reporting that Michelle Dasso's Illini women's team has received commitments from two high school seniors: Melissa Kopinski of Palos Hills Stagg and Julia Jamieson of Wilmette Loyola Academy. Kopinski placed fourth in singles at the 2009 IHSA state tournament. rates Kopinski as a blue chip five-star recruit and ranks her No. 23 nationally in the Class of 2011. Jamieson, a four-star recruit, is ranked 59th in her class. Kopinski is the twin sister of UI men's commitment Tim Kopinski, a four-star recruit from Stagg.

Offense on track in soccer rout

CHAMPAIGN – The hot start to Vanessa DiBernardo's freshman season continued Sunday as the midfielder tallied the opening goal in a 3-0 victory against Ball State.

With the win, Illinois has outscored its opponents 8-1 during a 3-0 getaway to start the season. DiBernardo has been at the center of the action, leading the Illini with three goals and seven points.

Next up for the Illini (2-0) is a home game against Ball State on Sunday afternoon. 

Illini find offensive rhythm in home opener

CHAMPAIGN – Vanessa DiBernardo, Nicole Denenberg and Jenna Carosio scored as Illinois pulled away in the second half to beat Wright State 3-1 in its home opener Tuesday.

The Illini (2-0) broke a 1-1 halftime tie by dominating offensively. For the match, they outshot the Raiders 34-4.

For (soccer) openers, offense clicks

CHICAGO – Freshman Vanessa DiBernardo had a hand in each of the Illinois soccer team's goals Friday night in a season-opening 2-0 victory against Loyola.

Senior defender Danielle Kot lifted the Illini to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of the first half, heading in a corner kick from DiBernardo. The goal was Kot's first since her freshman season in 2007.
