Illini open with Memphis in NCAA tourney

CHAMPAIGN – The Illinois soccer team has been holding its breath since a first-round loss in the Big Ten tournament last week threatened to push the Illini out of the NCAA tournament picture.

For the moment anyway, Janet Rayfield's squad can relax. Illinois will play Conference USA champion Memphis (15-4-2) in the first round of this year's national tournament at 4 p.m. Friday in Columbia, Mo.

Points back on PGA Tour

Former Illinois golfer D.A. Points will return to the PGA Tour in 2009 after finishing in the top 25 on the Nationwide Tour’s money list this season.
Points, who played on the PGA Tour in 2005 and 2006 said he hopes to be able to stick around.

“I’ve grown a lot. I have a better understanding of what is going to make me better at my craft,” Points said. “Next year when I’m on the PGA Tour, hopefully I’ll be able to excel, not only to keep my card, but also win and become a great player out there.”

UI trustees to consider extending contract with White

The University of Illinois is poised to extend its contract with President B. Joseph White.

The board of trustees, which is scheduled to meet Thursday in Springfield, will consider a proposal to extend White's contract by a year and a half, through June 30, 2011.

Soccer falls in shootout

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Two overtimes and six shootout attempts weren’t enough to decide Thursday night’s Big Ten soccer tournament quarterfinal between Illinois and Michigan State.

Jamie Alvis missed on Illinois’ sixth shootout attempt. Michigan State’s Courtney Shegos didn’t, and the Spartans won 1-0 for a shot at top-seeded Penn State in the semifinals.

Zurrer makes soccer history

Illinois soccer player Emily Zurrer was named to the All-Big Ten first team Wednesday, becoming the first three-time first-teamer in the program's history.

The senior defender also received the award in 2006 and 2007.

League soccer tourney might end

IOWA CITY, Iowa – This weekend's Big Ten women's soccer tournament could be the conference's last.

Unhappy with the current format, league coaches were unable to come up with an alternative that was acceptable to its group and to school athletic officials.

Soccer team plants seed

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois' seniors capped their home careers with a 1-0 Big Ten women's soccer victory against Purdue on Friday night.

Senior defender Emily Zurrer scored the game- winning goal on an assist from senior midfielder Marti Desjarlais in the 27th minute.

CHAMPAIGN – They say "home is where the heart is." For the Illinois soccer team, home is where the wins are.

Chichi Nweke scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season and Laura Knutson put the game on ice with her first score of the year as the Illini beat Ohio State 2-0 on Sunday for their 14th victory in the last 15 matches at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium.
