Illinois softball continues its winning ways

TULSA, Okla. — The 25th-ranked Illinois softball team bumped its win streak to three games with an opening sweep of its first two foes at the OSU-Tulsa Invitational on Friday.

Illinois defeated Northern Iowa 10-9 in eight innings and capped off the day with a 6-4 win against Tulsa.

Saturday's UI roundup: Baseball clinches series against Owls

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Andy Fisher gave up just one run on two hits to lead Illinois baseball to a 5-3 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday that clinched the three-game weekend series on the road.

Fisher tied a career high with nine strikeouts in six innings on the mound, while the Illini (5-0) plated two runs in both the third and sixth innings to remain unbeaten this season.

Korte, Illini use late rally to down Owls

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Illinois baseball had the rally caps working late in Friday night's series opener at Florida Atlantic.

Jeff Korte clubbed a game-tying three-run homer to right field and Zac Taylor earned a bases-loaded walk to plate the go-ahead run as the Illini rallied for four runs in the ninth inning before eventually collecting a stunning 7-6 victory over the host Owls.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Illinois baseball balanced good arms with strong bats Saturday afternoon to claim a 5-2 victory over No. 20 Wake Forest.

HOUSTON — An opening-day doubleheader against ranked opponents offered a huge test for Illinois softball on Friday afternoon.

And the Illini aced it with flying colors.

A pair of home runs and capitalizing on a few opposing errors helped Illinois thrive in its season opener, winning 7-4 over No. 22 Oklahoma State to begin its stay at the five-game Houston Invitational.

Veteran-laden Illini begin challenging 2019 slate

URBANA — Annie Fleming didn't necessarily anticipate she'd play softball for Illinois in 2019.

Simply because the Chillicothe native figured her final season with the Illini would happen in 2018.

But a broken wrist in late January — and a subsequent decision to redshirt last season — meant her fifth and final season with Illinois would have to wait.
