CHAMPAIGN — One day after Illinois baseball had each game of its doubleheader against Southern Illinois decided by a single run, its offense refused to stay quiet.

The result? Multiple career days at the plate, a fourth series sweep in five weekends and the best 16-game start to the season for the Illini in three decades.

The Illini (12-3) earned a pair of 5-4 wins in a doubleheader against Southern Illinois, using late offense to key a strong first showing at Illinois Field.

Scoring a combined 20 runs on 22 hits, the Illini cruised to a pair of run-rule shortened wins — an 11-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara followed by a 9-1 victory over Cal Poly in Friday doubleheader that kicked off the team's stay in the LMU Tournament.

'Champ' proponents make pitch to UI trustees; Chief defenders critical

URBANA — "Champ" made his official pitch to be the University of Illinois mascot Thursday, with an ROTC student showing up in full costume to greet UI trustees.

UI sophomore Mike Skibski presented the idea for a World War I soldier to represent the Fighting Illini during the public comment section of the board's meeting at the Illini Union.

TULSA, Okla. — The 25th-ranked Illinois softball team bumped its win streak to three games with an opening sweep of its first two foes at the OSU-Tulsa Invitational on Friday.

Illinois defeated Northern Iowa 10-9 in eight innings and capped off the day with a 6-4 win against Tulsa.

Saturday's UI roundup: Baseball clinches series against Owls

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Andy Fisher gave up just one run on two hits to lead Illinois baseball to a 5-3 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday that clinched the three-game weekend series on the road.

Fisher tied a career high with nine strikeouts in six innings on the mound, while the Illini (5-0) plated two runs in both the third and sixth innings to remain unbeaten this season.

Korte, Illini use late rally to down Owls

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Illinois baseball had the rally caps working late in Friday night's series opener at Florida Atlantic.

Jeff Korte clubbed a game-tying three-run homer to right field and Zac Taylor earned a bases-loaded walk to plate the go-ahead run as the Illini rallied for four runs in the ninth inning before eventually collecting a stunning 7-6 victory over the host Owls.
