URBANA — Nine years after the retirement of Chief Illiniwek, the University of Illinois is launching a process to choose a “first-ever” athletic mascot.

CHAMPAIGN — Two Illinois swimmers will have the opportunity to compete at the Canadian Olympic Trials this week.

Samantha Stratford and Megan Vuong will represent the Illini at the meet, which starts today and runs through Sunday. Stratford, a native of Cambridge, Ontario, has qualified in the 100-meter butterfly, 200 individual medley and 400 individual medley.

Asmussen: Learning at heart of Whitman hire

Chris Peacock knows Josh Whitman. And he knows Illinois athletics.

Peacock and Whitman worked together at Illinois from 2005 to ’08. When Whitman became the athletic director at Washington University, he brought Peacock to the St. Louis school as his right-hand man, naming him deputy director.

Now, Whitman is in charge at Illinois.

ADs are mostly businessmen today, backgrounded in administration or holding a law degree like the UI’s Josh Whitman. They have oversight responsibilities for multiple sports, but their principal job is schmoozing donors and updating facilities.
