URBANA — Illinois athletes maintained an overall grade point average of 3.16 last fall, and by some measures have graduation rates comparable to the broader student body, according to data supplied to the campus Academic Senate.
In his final home appearance, 44 years ago Sunday — March 5, 1973 — star forward Nick Weatherspoon became Illinois basketball’s then-all-time scoring leader. After the Illini’s 77-76 win versus Northwestern, previous UI scoring champ Dave Scholz presented the record-setting ball to “The Spoon.” Weatherspoon played one final game five days later, scoring 17 additional points against Iowa.
CHAMPAIGN — The inaugural Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame class is loaded with familiar names, 28 of the greatest in Illini history from players to coaches. The 2017 class was announced Thursday morning, rounding out the group that was started last year with All-American linebacker Dick Butkus.

Seymour recorded a personal-best time in the 60-meter hurdles prelims (8.09 seconds) and again in the final (7.98) to finish as the top collegian at the Rod McCravy Memorial.
Thirty-three years ago Sunday, former Illini star Jack Squirek scored a touchdown on a 5-yard interception as the Los Angeles Raiders defeated the Washington Redskins 38-9 in Super Bowl XVIII.
