Swimming and Diving
I love sports.
And I love movies/TV.
Thanks to Kirk Buchner, both my worlds collide. In a good way.
The Canadian-based Buchner is the owner/creator of the Fictitious Athlete Hall of Fame.
“It is a labor of love,” Buchner said.
We are left to wonder:
Why are University of Illinois men’s spring sports having such success while the school’s teams in the “money sports,” football and basketball, struggle?
Taylor Mason, a 1978 Illini football letter winner, capitalized on an unfortunate knee injury his junior season to launch his now-35-year career as a comedian, musician and entertainer.
A walk-on middle guard from Ottawa High School, he played alongside such Illinois defensive stalwarts as John Sullivan, Jerry Ramshaw and Dennis Flynn.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Illinois had missed 20 straight shots at one point in the first half of Saturday’s game at Purdue and shot just 15.8 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Illini’s deficit at that juncture? Just eight points. And coach Matt Bollant didn’t feel too bad about that.
CHAMPAIGN — Illinois’ Thomas Detry captured his second Big Ten Golfer of the Week honor for the 2014-15 season Wednesday, giving the Illini their fourth weekly recognition of the campaign.
A “level playing field” was always a myth.
It became even more so last month when the Power-5 conferences voted to allow athletic scholarships up to “cost of attendance,” resulting in additional stipends for full-scholarship athletes at numbers varying, within the Big Ten, from about $1,900 at Purdue to around $5,700 at Penn State.
What’s fair about that?
CHAMPAIGN — The Illinois women’s soccer team finalized its 2015 class Friday, adding two midfielders, a forward and a defender.
CHAMPAIGN — The fourth-ranked Illinois men’s gymnastics team started its home slate with an impressive win against Minnesota on Saturday at Huff Hall.
The Illini topped the Golden Gophers after compiling a score of 435.200 compared with 419.800 for Minnesota.
PLACIDA, Fla. — The Illinois men’s golf team swept the morning four-ball matches and won five of six singles matches, defeating Illinois State 8-1 on Saturday at the 12th annual Tinervin Cup.
CHAMPAIGN — Alex Diab, Johnny Jacobson, Blake Martin and Austin Lober recently signed letters of intent to join the Illinois men’s gymnastics team, coach Justin Spring said.
Diab, who attends Glenbard West High School, has been a member of the National Team. At the 2014 Junior Olympic Nationals, Diab placed first on still rings, second on floor and sixth in the all-around.
