SPRINGFIELD — Speaking to a House subcommittee Wednesday on behalf of 12 of the state’s 13 NCAA Division I schools — all except Chicago State — University of Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman said he opposed any bill that would allow sports betting on collegiate athletics in Illinois.

UI roundup: Edwards pitches softball to victory

URBANA — Taylor Edwards didn’t need to overpower No. 23 Wisconsin when she took the circle Saturday for Illinois softball.

She simply had to record outs by any means necessary. And that’s exactly what the Arcola product did.

CHAMPAIGN — After spending the first month of the season on the road, Illinois baseball returned home with style Saturday.

The Illini (12-3) earned a pair of 5-4 wins in a doubleheader against Southern Illinois, using late offense to key a strong first showing at Illinois Field.

Illini softball earns doubleheader sweep

LOS ANGELES — Hardly a modest day at the plate for Illinois softball.

Scoring a combined 20 runs on 22 hits, the Illini cruised to a pair of run-rule shortened wins — an 11-2 victory over UC Santa Barbara followed by a 9-1 victory over Cal Poly in Friday doubleheader that kicked off the team's stay in the LMU Tournament.

'Champ' proponents make pitch to UI trustees; Chief defenders critical

URBANA — "Champ" made his official pitch to be the University of Illinois mascot Thursday, with an ROTC student showing up in full costume to greet UI trustees.

UI sophomore Mike Skibski presented the idea for a World War I soldier to represent the Fighting Illini during the public comment section of the board's meeting at the Illini Union.
