UI Year in Review: From start to finish, what a wild ride it was

1. Malcolm Hill, basketball. Senior guard did it all for the Illini — again — ranking in the top two on the team in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals.

2. Isaiah Martinez, wrestling. Two-time national champion was denied a third in the 165-pound title match — only his second career loss — after moving up a weight class.

Why an A: Count the ways. Mike Small's squad won its third straight Big Ten championship, with Dylan Meyer winning a seventh straight individual title for the Illini. A 10th straight NCAA tournament appearance and third straight national semifinals berth followed.

Tirico to emcee Illini Hall of Fame event

CHAMPAIGN — The date was already set for when Illinois athletics will introduce its first-ever Hall of Fame class to the public.

Now, the person who will help lead said introductions of the 28-person class is known.

NBC Sports broadcaster Mike Tirico will serve as the emcee for the event slated for June 23 in Chicago, the UI announced on Wednesday.

First report in five years shows UI athletes making grade

URBANA — Illinois athletes maintained an overall grade point average of 3.16 last fall, and by some measures have graduation rates comparable to the broader student body, according to data supplied to the campus Academic Senate.

Illini legends, lists and lore: March 5 in Illini history

In his final home appearance, 44 years ago Sunday — March 5, 1973 — star forward Nick Weatherspoon became Illinois basketball’s then-all-time scoring leader. After the Illini’s 77-76 win versus Northwestern, previous UI scoring champ Dave Scholz presented the record-setting ball to “The Spoon.” Weatherspoon played one final game five days later, scoring 17 additional points against Iowa.

Illinois will induct 28 into Hall of Fame

CHAMPAIGN — The inaugural Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame class is loaded with familiar names, 28 of the greatest in Illini history from players to coaches. The 2017 class was announced Thursday morning, rounding out the group that was started last year with All-American linebacker Dick Butkus.
