Elephants have the right idea.

When their time comes, they shuffle off to their designated area — no matter the distance — and pass quietly from the scene. There's a certain dignity about it.

I'm not yet ready for that, for sure, but I mistakenly thought I could do Douglas MacArthur's "old soldier" bit and let 51-year-old Tatelines fade unnoticed from the writing scene.

Whitman explains 'war chant' decision in open letter

CHAMPAIGN — University of Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman released an open letter Monday afternoon defending the decision to end the "war chant" at all athletic events.

UI students were first informed of the decision at Thursday’s Illini soccer match, when an athletics official told a group who were playing it to stop.

UI makes logo change official

The University of Illinois announced today that it will return to a single logo — the orange block "I" still used by Illinois athletics — as it moves to unify its branding.

CHAMPAIGN — Orange and blue have defined the University of Illinois' identity for more than a century, since students chose the official school colors in 1894.

The exact shades have varied over the years — from a deep navy to a medium blue, from orange-yellow to the reddish-orange on the new Illini uniforms adopted three years ago.

Downtown Champaign development awaits UI decision

CHAMPAIGN — Members of the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District board expressed interest Wednesday in a proposed multimillion-dollar development project in downtown Champaign that would include an addition to the MTD's Illinois Terminal building.

But both local developer Hans Grotelueschen and MTD Managing Director Karl Gnadt cautioned that the project is in its early stages.
