Clapp, Illini off to strong start

CHAMPAIGN — The Illinois swimming and diving team jumped to a big lead on the first day of a two-day meet against Michigan State on Thursday.

The Illini compiled seven first-place finishes in 10 events to take a 120-66 advantage into tonight’s competition.

llinois senior Marissa Clapp, a Bismarck-Henning product, broke the pool record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2 minutes, 4.45 seconds. Clapp also won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.74).

Other individual event winners included Torrey Loper and Kristen Kloeckener.

Strong day for Souza. Illinois sophomore Abe Souza defeated Ball State’s Jorge Rodriguez before upending Western Illinois’ Zach Frisch on Thursday to advance to the final round of the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional qualifying tournament. Both victories came in straight sets.

Souza will play Zeyad Montasser of Western Michigan today with a berth in the main draw on the line.
