IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa's volleyball team has been tough at home this season, but No. 16 Illinois solved the Hawkeyes on Friday night in a Big Ten match.
Coach Don Hardin's Illini rallied for a 20-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-22 victory, their sixth in a row and ninth in 10 matches.
"Iowa fought tooth and nail all the way down to the stretch," Hardin said. "To come out of here with a win is a big accomplishment."
The win kept Illinois (19-5, 10-3) in sole possession of second place in the league.
In women's swimming and diving:
Records fall. Junior CeCe Marizu set a pool record in the 100 backstroke (58.07 seconds) and freshman Brittany McGowan set a pool record in the 200 butterfly (2 minutes, 4.88 seconds), lifting Illinois to a victory against host Illinois State.
In women's tennis:
Doubles team shines. Sophomore Marisa Lambropoulos and freshman Chelcie Abajian went 2-0 in their doubles matches on the first day of the Midwest Blast at Atkins Tennis Center.
Lambropoulos and Abajian earned 8-4 victories against Denver and Wichita State.
In men's tennis:
Illini in main draw. Illinois graduate GD Jones and freshman Dennis Nevolo received wild-card entries for the main draw of the upcoming JSM Challenger at Atkins Tennis Center.
