Tennis team returns to form

URBANA – Illinois' 16th-ranked men's tennis team rebounded from last week's season-opening loss to Virginia, topping Denver 6-1 Friday night at Atkins Tennis Center.

The Illini were led by 11th-ranked Dennis Nevolo, who defeated 25th-ranked Enej Bonin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles after Illinois dropped the doubles point.

Other Illinois singles winners: KU Singh (No. 2), Johnny Hamui (No. 3), Abe Souza (No. 4), Roy Kalmanovich (No. 5); and Stephen Hoh (No. 6).

In women's swimming & diving:

McGowan fourth. Junior Brittany McGowan finished fourth in the 200 butterfly (2 minutes, 5.44 seconds) to pace the Illini at the first day of the Big Ten Quad Duals in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Illini trailed No. 20 Purdue (160-45), No. 13 Minnesota (170-35) and No. 16 Wisconsin (149-55).

"It was not our best day," UI coach Sue Novitsky said. "This is the first time this year that we are going up against teams who we know are very good, and we struggled. I think we were trying to do too much instead of letting ourselves do what we're trained to do. As a team, we're trying to get better, and now it's time for us to compete against the next level of competition and believe that we belong and can compete."
