Illini swimmers top their times

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Courtney Pope and Brittany McGowan swam the ninth- and 10th-fastest 50 freestyle times in Illinois history during Thursday's Big Ten championships.

Pope recorded a personal-best time of 23.52 seconds during her prelim. McGowan finished in a personal-best 23.55.

During the second day of the meet, 10 other Illini swimmers set personal bests and four others topped season bests.

The Illinois 200 freestyle relay finished in 1:32.25, the fifth-fastest time in school history. The Illini had an NCAA provisional B qualifying time.

Illinois stands 10th in the team standings with 50 points. The Illini didn't participate in any individual finals Thursday.

The meet continues today and Saturday at the Campus Recreation Wellness Center pool. Iowa also hosts the men's meet.
