UI roundup: Top-ranked golfers scorch Illinois State

PLACIDA, Fla. — The Illinois men’s golf team swept the morning four-ball matches and won five of six singles matches, defeating Illinois State 8-1 on Saturday at the 12th annual Tinervin Cup.

Men's gymnastics adds four

CHAMPAIGN — Alex Diab, Johnny Jacobson, Blake Martin and Austin Lober recently signed letters of intent to join the Illinois men’s gymnastics team, coach Justin Spring said.

Diab, who attends Glenbard West High School, has been a member of the National Team. At the 2014 Junior Olympic Nationals, Diab placed first on still rings, second on floor and sixth in the all-around.

UI roundup: Kopinski and Guignon on to championship match

FLUSHING, N.Y. — Another day, another victory for Tim Kopinski and Ross Guignon at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships.

The University of Illinois duo advanced to the event’s doubles championship Saturday with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (7) victory over UCLA’s Mackenzie McDonald and Martin Redlicki. It was a matchup of unranked teams in the tournament.

UI roundup: Volleyball overcomes two-set deficit

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Illinois built a 13-9 lead in the first set of Saturday’s Big Ten match against Michigan. It wasn’t enough. Neither was an 18-11 advantage in the second set. The Wolverines rallied to win both, including a 9-0 run with Abby Cole and Adeja Lambert trading kills back and forth to finish the second set.

UI wrap: Soccer's losing streak hits four

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Illinois was quick to answer Rutgers’ early goal in Friday’s Big Ten showdown, matching the Scarlet Knights less than a minute after they took the lead.

The Illini couldn’t, however, come up with the equalizer when Rutgers scored the go-ahead — and ultimately winning — goal with less than five minutes to play in its 2-1 victory.
