Illini fall to Lions gymnasts

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Paul Ruggeri won the vault, floor exercise and the parallel bars but No. 3 Illinois dropped a 347.800-346.500 decision to No. 2 Penn State in men's gymnastics Saturday.

C.J. Maestas, who finished second to Ruggeri on the parallel bars, won the horizontal bar.

Illini swimmers top their times

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Courtney Pope and Brittany McGowan swam the ninth- and 10th-fastest 50 freestyle times in Illinois history during Thursday's Big Ten championships.

Pope recorded a personal-best time of 23.52 seconds during her prelim. McGowan finished in a personal-best 23.55.

Richartz breaks UI pole vault mark

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois sophomore Stephanie Richartz broke the school record in the indoor pole vault Saturday at the season-opening Illinois Open women’s track and field meet at the UI Armory.

Richartz cleared 13 feet, 11/2 inches. She held the previous mark of 12-111/2, set at the 2011 Big Ten Indoor Championships.

Ward, Illini bounce back

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Seventh-ranked Illinois rebounded from Friday's loss to Michigan State by beating No. 23 Michigan 22-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-21 on Saturday.

The Illini (25-4, 14-4 Big Ten) will enter the regular season's final week tied for second with Penn State and Purdue. All three teams trail Nebraska (16-2), which has clinched a share of the crown with two matches remaining.

Pitching brings Challenge win

CLEARWATER, Fla. – John Anderson and Chris Pack combined on a four-hitter as the Illinois baseball team beat Cincinnati 7-3 on Saturday at Jack Russell Stadium.

With the win, Illinois evened its record at 1-1 in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge. The Illini finish the series today against West Virginia.

Gay, UI trample Friars

MIAMI – Pepper Gay struck out a career-high 10 as the Illinois softball team beat Providence 8-0 in its opening game of the Blue & Gold Felsberg Memorial Tournament on Friday.
