COLUMBUS, Ohio – Illinois senior Ryan Rowe continued his trek toward the ITA National Indoor Championships men's singles title, winning two matches Friday.
Rowe, ranked ninth, defeated Virginia Tech's Albert Larregola 6-7 (0), 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. He bounced Miami's Daniel Vallverdu 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Illinois junior Marissa Clapp won three events and set a pool record Saturday in a 157-141 women's swimming and diving loss to Michigan State.
The Bismarck-Henning product won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2 minutes, 18.96 seconds to break the Charles McCaffree Pool mark. Clapp also won the 100 breaststroke – edging runner-up Sarah Biasello of Michigan State by 0.44 second – and the 400 individual medley.
CHAMPAIGN – Illinois' seniors had a night to remember.
Urbana product Ella Masar scored two goals, leading the Illini to a 3-0 Big Ten soccer victory Friday night that snapped No. 24 Indiana's 13-match unbeaten streak.
IOWA CITY, Iowa – A hand injury kept Vicki Brown out of the starting lineup and off the court for most of the match.
Freshman Abby Nelson made sure the Illinois middle blocker was barely missed.
CHAMPAIGN – Naperville's Meghan Mason, a state champion in the 400 free relay, has signed to swim at Illinois.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore Lesiba Masheto finished fifth in the 400-meter dash on Saturday with a school-record time of 46.14 seconds at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The finish gave him All-America status, and the time broke the school record previously held by Abe Jones (46.18 in 2006).
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Illinois senior Yvonne Mensah earned sixth place in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships, going 20 feet, 6 1/4 inches to claim All-America honors Friday.
"I thought everyone really competed and did well today," UI women's coach Gary Winckler said.
MINNEAPOLIS – Illinois senior Barbie Viney finished 57th in the 50 freestyle prelims Thursday at the NCAA Championships.
Viney, who was seeded 54th in the event, finished in 23.28 seconds.
