Illinois pulls for Novitsky

Sue Novitsky, a former NCAA Division II All-American at Oakland University, was named Illinois' women's swimming and diving head coach Thursday, athletic director Ron Guenther said.

"Her leadership qualities and loyalty to the University of Illinois made her a natural choice. I expect a smooth transition for our swimming and diving program to the new coaching staff," Guenther said.

Lutz steps down

Jim Lutz, the winningest women's swimming and diving coach in Illinois history, resigned Thursday, athletic director Ron Guenther said.

Sue Novitsky, an assistant the past three seasons, was named interim coach.

Coaches with vision

CHAMPAIGN – Imagine swimming laps and not being able to see the end of the pool as you approach it. Or the lane lines at the bottom of the pool. Or even the floating lane markers.

UI gains

Juniors Anna Christiansen and Darcy Adler finished fourth in the 400 individual medley and the 100 breastroke, respectively, as Illinois moved from ninth to eighth place on the second day of the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis.

Illini sophomore Jessica Aveyard finished 11th in the 500 freestyle on the first day of the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis.

Christiansen shines

MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Anna Christiansen and senior Betsy Nagel posted victories Friday on the first day of the Big Ten Quads, but the Illini trail Minnesota, Wisconsin and Purdue.

Dietz: Work goes on for Kral

There's no football tradition to wave at prospective students. There are no trophy cases filled with basketball tournament hardware. The gym doesn't even have a floor yet.

Academics always have come before athletics for Ed Kral, and they have to at his new job. Kral is the athletic director at St. Thomas More High School, which will open this fall.

Swimmers join Illini team

Crystal McAdam, Stacy Bogle, Emily Garrison and Laura O'Connor signed letters of intent to swim for UI coach Jim Lutz.

Freshman keys Illini swim win

CHAMPAIGN – Freshman Astrid Matthias won an individual event and was on two winning relay teams Sunday, helping the Illinois women's swim team win for the first time in eight tries against Kansas in the Dual Meet Extravaganza at IMPE Pool.
