UI quartet trims Rolex opponents

Jeff Laski and Jakub Teply won first- and second-round matches, 2 of 4 Illinois singles tennis players to advance Friday at the Rolex Regionals in Atkins Tennis Center.

No. 5 seed Gavin Sontag and No. 13 Oliver Freelove, who received first-round byes, also advanced to the third round.

No. 2 Cary Franklin was upset in his second-round match, and Matt Snyder was ousted in the first round.

The regionals continue today, and admission is free.

Illini sweep in swimming

Junior Erin Didde, sophomore Emily Wang and freshman Anna Christiansen each won two events as Illinois beat Big Ten Conference foes Iowa and Indiana in dual meets at Iowa City, Iowa.

Didde won the 200-yard backstroke in an Iowa pool-record time and also took the 100 back. Wang won the 100 and 200 freestyles, and Christiansen the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley.

Other UI winners: Nicola Homenock in the 100 butterfly and the 400 free relay team.

Illinois is 4-0, 3-0 Big Ten.
