Abdelnour falls in Big Ten tourney semifinal

MADISON, Wis. — Bruno Abdelnour advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Sunday, but the senior’s run ended there with a straight-sets loss to Wisconsin’s Oska Wikberg, 6-0, 6-1.

Third-seeded Abdelnour beat Purdue’s Szymon Tatarczyk 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

“Today was a good lesson for Bruno,” UI assistant Marcos Asse said. “You can lose it as soon as you get it.”

In women’s action:
Smutko victorious.
Breanne Smutko notched the lone Illini victory of the day, a straight-sets win against Gisella Pere as Illinois went 1-3 against Purdue to wrap up the Midwest Blast at Atkins Tennis Center.

Smutko was 2-1 this weekend.

“This team will continue to learn and grow with each day,” UI coach Michelle Dasso said. “It will be key for us to exude self-confidence in our games, regardless of how we are feeling that given day.”
