Roundup: Wrestlers cruise past Indiana
CHAMPAIGN — Six Illini earned bonus points Sunday, leading the Illinois wrestling team to a 30-9 victory against Indiana at Huff Hall.
No. 4 Jesse Delgado opened the match with a major decision at 125 pounds. Then came No. 10 Daryl Thomas, who notched a technical fall victory at 133.
Steven Rodrigues (141) and Caleb Ervin (149) followed with major decisions, and the rout was on.
“I think overall we did a good job today,” Illini coach Jim Heffernan said. “It was good to get back on the mat after last weekend (losses at Nebraska and Minnesota). There were a lot of good things we saw today.”
No. 7 Conrad Polz (165) won by decision, No. 8 Jordan Blanton (174) won a major decision, and No. 5 Mario Gonzales was awarded a forfeit.
In women’s tennis:
Illini fall to Vandy. Illinois’ Melissa Kopinski, who is ranked 106th nationally, earned a 7-6 (4), 6-1 victory for the lone Illini point in a 4-1 setback to Vanderbilt during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Atkins Center.
“We have to figure out a way to get on the board early by securing the doubles point,” Illini coach Michelle Dasso said. “In college tennis, getting that early edge can really make a statement and set the tone for the singles matches.”
