Tennis a win away from homecoming

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — One down, one to go for Brad Dancer’s Illinois tennis team.

The Illini shut out Georgia State 4-0 on Friday in their NCAA opener. With one more win — today at 16th-seeded Vanderbilt — Illinois would return home for the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships beginning Thursday.

“We are definitely looking forward to (today’s) match,” said Jared Hiltzik, who won in singles and doubles. “The team is excited, and I know it’s going to be a great match.”

Tim Kopinski and Stephen Hoh closed out the match after the Illini won the doubles point.

Illinois improved to 11-3 this season when winning the doubles point.

“I was really happy with how all the guys fought across the board,” Hoh said.
